But what if your cat’s allergic to you? Research at Britain’s Edinburgh University suggests that some cats are allergic to their owners. The allergy is a reaction to human skin or to dust mites. These microscopic pests feed on the tiny flakes of skin we all shed naturally. Many humans develop severe allergic reactions to dust mites, so it’s not surprising cats would, too. Symptoms in cats include itchiness on the face and paws, and chewing and licking large quantities of fur.

Dust mites live by the millions in mattresses, carpets, upholstered furniture, drapes, and pillows, so minimize the presence of these in your home, especially in bedrooms. Cover mattresses and pillows with mite-proof covers. Launder bedding and other washables such as throw rugs frequently in hot water. Use a laundry additive formulated to kill dust mites. Vacuum carpets, drapes, and upholstered furniture frequently, and dispose of the bag promptly.

If it’s not dust mites, your cat could be allergic to a cosmetic, soap, or fragrance you use rather than to you. Minimize or eliminate your use of scented products, change brands, or seek out hypoallergenic products. You and your cat may both benefit.
